Bedside Therapeutic Music

As a Certified Therapeutic Musician (CTM) (or “Harp Therapist”), multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist, Jennifer Smith uses her depth of musical aptitude and her 20+ years of professionally serving others to provide comfort, joy and relief to patients.

As no two people are alike, Jennifer personally tailors each therapeutic performance to the individual needs of the patient. Using a blend of improvised melody, ambient soundscapes and precomposed repertoire, Jennifer connects with the patient on a human level first, and then crafts and curates music that resonates with them to sonically embrace and soothe the soul. She is an adoring wife and mother.

FAQs

What Does a Certified Therapeutic Musician Do?

Certified Therapeutic Musicians support the work of healthcare professionals by playing appropriate music at the bedsides of the ill and/or dying in hospital and hospice settings. The work of a Certified Therapeutic Musician is neither entertainment nor an interactive therapy and does not require patient response.  It is music only, offered unobtrusively.

Music at the bedside has been shown through numerous studies to be effective in pain management, stress reduction, immune system response, stabilization of body rhythms and mood enhancement. The specific music played is based on the immediate and changing needs of the patient. Music also has a calming influence on family and staff. Therapeutic music brings the warmth of human connection in environments that can sometimes seem cold and impersonal.
My ministry seeks to be a blessing to patients, caretakers and staff, and to help bring peace. I desire to bring “small, qualitative moments” that make an impact in a place of suffering, worry and anxiety.

Jennifer Smith’s journey as a Harp Therapist began with a dream, and it flourished with her dedication to music and deep love for people.

Jennifer Smith is a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and Certified Clinical Musician (or “Harp Therapist”) who combines her mastery of musicianship and immersion in Scripture to create individually-tailored music therapy sessions for those with whom she interacts.

Jennifer holds a Master of Liberal Arts (2014) from Dallas Baptist University and is a Licensed Minister who serves as a Minister of Pastoral Care Music, and has served both on worship teams and on the National Leadership Council for World Vision, the largest Christian nonprofit, for over 14 years. As a Harp Therapist, Jennifer first connects with patients then curates a personalized performance of precomposed and improvised pieces, rather than relying on a preexisting setlist. From her wealth of professional experience as a musician, advocate, Christian leader, and charitable worker, Jennifer crafts a holistic music therapy experience to soothe, comfort, and aid all those with whom she interacts.
